If you are an admitted student, you may already be thinking about how you can best prepare for the fall. We asked Hanna Seferos, an Academic Advising Specialist in Academic and Student Affairs, to share some key resources that will help you get ready to hit the ground running at Harris.

Recommended Resources

  • Math Camp –Math Camp is helpful if you want to get back into the swing of school, or if you just need a math/coding refresher. The deadline to register is June 26, 2020. Register here.
  • Math self-assessment - Not only will the self-assessment help determine whether you should attend Math Camp, but it is also a useful diagnostic tool for how much support you may need to be successful on the math exam and beyond.
  • DiagKNOWstics – Over the summer, you will gain access to this great tool for self-study which will also be used during Math Camp. DiagKNOWstics was developed by one of our very own PhD students, Rohen Shah, who is currently one of the lead instructors for Math Camp.
You will have access to all of the subjects on the platform: microeconomics, SAT Math, Algebra, and Calculus. We recommend you start with "Algebra" and "Calculus" to get a head start before Math Camp, where you will complete these modules. You may also check out the Economics platform (which covers some topics in your fall microeconomics course). You will use this platform during Math Camp, and will continue to have access during the entirety of your time as a Harris student. Here is a demo video on how to get the most out of the platform.
  • DataQuest - This self-paced resource for statistical coding will be available to you beginning in July, at which point you will have 6 months free premium access to help as you work through the Core. You’ll be expected to use the statistical coding programs Stata and R in your statistics courses in the core, as well as electives afterwards. Learning math and coding at the same time can be challenging, so we provide this resource early in the summer so you can have a headstart, and continue to utilize it throughout the Autumn Quarter to support your learning. ASA will provide a list of recommended courses within DataQuest, but you are free to explore the entire platform.  The number one thing students tell us they wish they had done is invest more time in learning to code through DataQuest before classes start.
  • Kahn Academy/community college class – As a supplement to the resources available through Harris, you might consider checking out Kahn Academy, a free self-study resource online, or even taking a community college class to get back into the swing of being a student while you review math concepts.

Our other main suggestion is to activate and check your UChicago email and the admitted student portal often - this is where you will gain access to all the resources mentioned above.

Fall will be here before we know it, but hope we hope you will find these resources helpful as you prepare!
