April 17, 2025 Hanna SeferosIf you are an admitted student, you may already be thinking about how you can best prepare for the fall. We asked Hanna Seferos, an Director of Academic Advising on the Dean of Students team in Academic and Student Affairs, to share some key resources that will help you get ready to hit the ground running at Harris. Recommended Resources Math & Coding Camp—Math & Coding Camp is a three-week preparation course designed to prepare you with foundational skills for navigating your core courses. Participating is a great way to refresh your knowledge, practice coding, get back into the swing of school and begin meeting your classmates. The schedule and registration details will be shared in June. Math and Coding Self-Assessments—Not only will the self-assessments help our staff provide tailored recommendations on whether you should attend Math & Coding Camp, but they also serve as a useful diagnostic tool for how much support you may need to be successful on the math exam and in your Core courses. We will share the assessments in May and recommend that all students take both assessments. Dataquest—This self-paced resource for statistical coding will be available to you beginning in July, at which point you will have sixteen months of free access to help as you work through the Core and some electives, like the Data and Programming courses required for the Data Analytics specialization. Learning math and coding at the same time can be challenging, so we provide this resource early in the summer so you can have a head start and continue to utilize it throughout the autumn quarter to support your learning. Harris Orientation recommends that all incoming students complete the R Basics for Data Analysis Skill Path prior to autumn but you are free to explore the entire platform. The number one thing students tell us they wish they had done is invest more time in learning to code through Dataquest before classes start. DiagKNOWstics—In August, you will gain access to this self-study tool, designed to prepare you for the mandatory math exam administered in September. DiagKNOWstics is also used during Math & Coding Camp as homework. We recommend that you utilize this platform on your own to prepare for the exam, especially if you do not plan to attend Math & Coding Camp. You will have access to this platform for the entirety of your time as a Harris student. Kahn Academy/community college class—As a supplement to the resources available through Harris, you might consider checking out Kahn Academy, a free self-study resource online or even taking a community college class to get back into the swing of being a student while you review math concepts. Our other main suggestion is to activate and check your UChicago email and the admitted student portal often - this is where you will gain access to all the resources mentioned above. Fall will be here before we know it, but hope we hope you will find these resources helpful as you prepare!
