Masterclass with Koichiro Ito: "Renewable Energy Expansion: Key Challenges and Emerging Opportunities"

With the recent launches of the University's Institute for Climate and Sustainable Growth and Harris’ Master of Science in Climate and Energy Policy program, we are excited to present a Masterclass with Professor Koichiro Ito. His research interests lie at the intersection of environmental and energy economics, industrial organization, and public economics.

For this Masterclass, Ito will be sharing highlights from a recent presentation, "Renewable Energy Expansion: Key Challenges and Emerging Opportunities." Ito will highlight how—using data to build a structural model—he and his colleagues analyze the investment effects of market integration on renewable energy expansion. Ito will also show how they quantify the impact of market integration with and without the investment effects.

Ito’s research uses randomized field experiments and quasi-experimental designs to address policy relevant questions in energy and environmental policy. He received a BA from Kyoto University, an MA from University of British Columbia, and a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley. Prior to joining the University of Chicago, he was a SIEPR Postdoctoral Fellow at Stanford University and an Assistant Professor at Boston University.
