Athletics and Fitness Facilities

All Athletics sporting events are free to Harris students with a University ID. Dress up in your favorite UChicago attire and cheer on your Maroons! 

The University of Chicago offers all registered students free memberships (spouses can receive discounted memberships) to the two on-campus fitness facilities: the Ratner Athletics Center and the Henry Crown Field House. Registered students in programs that require the student services fee will have their membership automatically activated at the start of each quarter.

Campus Employment

If you have been awarded federal work study or are interested in opportunities for on-campus student employment, you can apply for a job through the student jobs board. A valid student ID is required to view the listings.

If you are relocating with a partner, you may encourage your partner to begin looking at meaningful employment in Chicago. If they are interested in working at the University of Chicago, scores of University jobs are available. 

Campus and Student Life

Campus and Student Life (CSL) is dedicated to helping graduate students experience university life at its fullest. They have a profound commitment to the diversity of our community and are focused on creating an environment where you can thrive. Through a wide array of programs and services, CSL provides opportunities and experiences that build community, help you grow personally and professionally, and create a place that you can call home now and throughout your life. 

Computing

Much of the work you will do as a Harris student will require a computer. But it is not absolutely necessary to purchase a computer. The Harris computing center has a bank of PCs with all of the software applications you will need. You can also gain remote access to a Windows server that has the same applications. Applications you will use include Microsoft Word and Stata. 

If you are planning to purchase a new computer, the University of Chicago’s TechStore offers a discount on a number of recommended Dell and Apple bundles. You can also take advantage of your University of Chicago student status to order your equipment online from a preferred vendor. 

The Graduate Council

The Graduate Council (GC) is the representative student government for the graduate students at the University of Chicago. GC meetings are held on Monday evenings and are open to the entire community.

The GC works to connect you with fellow graduate students, to support graduate academic and professional interests, and to engage with the University’s administration. It sponsors numerous events throughout the academic year, including bowling nights, First Fridays at the MCA, a discussion panel series, and ice skating on the midway, among others.

UChicagoGRAD

UChicagoGRAD supports University of Chicago graduate students in every stage of their academic careers. UChicagoGRAD offers resources—including programs, training, support, and funding opportunities—that support timely degree completion and enhance professional preparation.

Library

All Harris students with a valid ID have access to the entire University of Chicago Library system. This world-class network—which includes six campus libraries, special collections and research centers, and a wide range of digital resources—provides comprehensive resources and services in support of the research, teaching, and learning needs of the entire University community. 

Safety and Security

The University of Chicago campus is part of a vibrant city of 2.7 million residents. While the city and its surrounding neighborhoods have a great deal to offer, they also present all the challenges of a complex urban society. The University's Department of Safety & Security takes measures to ensure a safe campus environment, but it is important to keep in mind that a level of responsibility for crime prevention and personal safety also rests with each individual. We strongly encourage all incoming students to familiarize themselves with the University’s safety and emergency procedures.

Student Disability Services

Student Disability Services works to provide resources, support and accommodations for all students with disabilities and works to remove physical and attitudinal barriers, which may prevent their full participation in the University community.  Please contact them directly for accommodation requests while at Harris.

Student Loan Administration

The Student Loan Administration Office (SLA) is responsible for processing student loans and work-study for students in the graduate and professional schools. SLA's goal is to service and counsel graduate students with financing their education through student loans and work-study. SLA is also focused on informing and guiding current students on borrowing responsibly and alumni on available loan repayment terms and options.

Transportation

Living in the city is one of the most exciting aspects about studying at Harris. It's also a new experience for many of our students. We know getting around can be hard. However, we offer an array of transportation resources to help you make the most of our campus and neighborhoods.

UChicago Marketplace

The UChicago Marketplace is a self-service online listing specifically for the University of Chicago community. The marketplace is a great resource to find an apartment, get roommates, or buy and sell furniture throughout Hyde Park and greater Chicago.
