Dear Harris Community,
Thanks to all of you who participated in Harris’ Black History Month events and programming! It was a powerful and uplifting month filled with thought-provoking speakers who put into focus the Black experience in public policy. The wide-ranging programming convened policy leaders, academics, and change-makers from across the world, including our own faculty, fellows, and students. We also heard from our Black alumni who shared their advice with Harris students through a video series on social media, while current MPP students Phillippa Paisley and Taylor Robinson lent their voices to our new Perspectives contributor series.
Once again, I’m truly amazed by the strength and diversity of our community and grateful for the leadership of our Assistant Dean for Diversity & Inclusion, Michelle Hoereth, and the work of all the Harris staff, faculty, students, and alumni who helped put on such a wonderful series of programs.
In case you missed an event, I encourage you to see some of the highlights:

A special thank you to all of our event speakers and partners:

  • African American Mayors Association
  • Black Action in Public Policy Studies (BAPPS)
  • Harris Office of Diversity & Inclusion
  • Minorities in Public Policy Studies (MiPPS)
  • The Pearson Institute for the Study and Resolution of Global Conflicts
  • The University of Chicago Office of Civic Engagement

While February may be over, I encourage you to continue the conversation and to engage with your fellow members of the Harris community and beyond on these vital topics to explore and celebrate the Black experience in public policy.
Of course, events and programming are just one way that we are advancing our commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion at Harris through our D&I Roadmap. I encourage you to read more about our efforts on our website and reach out to Michelle Hoereth if you’re interested in getting involved.

PS. I hope to see you at our next D&I Perspectives series event with Harris’ very own Anjali Adukia on Thursday, March 11.
