We are so excited you are continuing your academic journey at the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy. As an international student, you may be required to attend the Academic English Pre-Matriculation Program (AEPP), often referred to as Language Camp. All international students admitted in Early Action or Round One have received an email detailing whether or not they are required to attend AEPP. Please check your email for more information.

Harris students attend Session One of AEPP. Session One runs August 6-28, with students arriving in Chicago a day or two before the program begins. Students attending AEPP will attend either the Speaking or Writing track. This is determined by your submitted English language requirement scores; students cannot choose which track to attend. You can read more about those sessions on the AEPP website. AEPP is a great opportunity to begin meeting your peers at Harris and the larger UChicago community.

Students do not need to attend AEPP if:

  • They have a total TOEFL score of 104 or higher, and a score of 26 or higher in the speaking sub-section of the TOEFL. For the IELTS, students must have a total score of 7 or greater, as well as a score of 7 or greater in the speaking sub-section.
  • They are eligible to be waived from the language requirement, as detailed on the Office of International Affairs Website.

If you meet the above requirements and do not need to attend AEPP, you have received an email confirming you do not need to attend. If you are still interested in attending, the email will provide you the option to register for AEPP.

Please see below for answers to frequently asked questions:

I do not meet the above requirements, but would like to waive out of AEPP. Do I have that option?

Students can waive out of AEPP in the following situations:

  • You can send a new TOEFL or IELTS score that meets the above requirements by June 1. If you choose to take another exam, please note if your new scores do not meet the requirements, you will still be required to attend AEPP.
  • If your total score is below 104 or 7 IELTS, you can request the option to take the Academic English Proficiency Assessment (AEPA). The exam costs $70.00. The results of the AEPA will determine if you are required to attend AEPP. If you meet this requirement, our team has sent you the form via email. Once you complete this form to register, our colleagues will be in contact with you to schedule the assessment. If you have not received this form then the scores you submitted did not meet the requirements and you are not eligible for this option.

When is the deadline to register for the AEPA exam?

Please register by May 1. If you do not register for the AEPA by May 1, we cannot guarantee the assessment will be available. Once you have registered for AEPA, you will receive an email from the Office of Language Assessment to schedule the test time. It can take one or two weeks to schedule the assessment. Therefore, we strongly recommend registering early to allow time for scheduling.  It is your responsibility to respond to the email and schedule the assessment before the deadline.

When will I know the results of the AEPA exam?

Harris will receive the AEPA results two-three weeks after assessment date. We will inform students whether or not they need AEPP by  June 1.

What if I cannot attend the first session of AEPP?

All Harris students are strongly encouraged to attend AEPA Session One as Math Camp and mandatory orientation activities occur at the same time as the AEPP Session Two.

If you have a conflict with AEPP Session One, then please email [email protected].

What if I take a new TOEFL or IELTS over the summer and it meets the requirement for an AEPA assessment, but I submit the score after May 1?

Students who submit such scores after May 1 may not be able to take the AEPA due to the time required to complete the assessment. If your new scores are submitted after May 1, even if they meet the requirements to be eligible for the AEPA, you may not be able to take the AEPA and will be required to attend AEPP.

What is the cost of the AEPP program?

The cost of the program is $700 for Master's students, which includes placement testing, weekday academic English classes, Friday workshops, weekend cultural programming, course materials, and advising. Additional orientation programming will also be offered by Harris during the language program to ensure that participants have a smooth transition into Harris.

The cost of the program will be billed to your student account during mid-August. Please visit this page for more information.
