Medical debt carries less weight on credit reports. But it’s still a burden for consumers

A piece on CNBC.com notes that, while medical debt has decreased for Americans in the last 10 years, unpaid medical debts continue to burden families in the U.S.  

As up to 3 million families across the U.S. are potentially eligible for medical debt forgiveness through the 2021 American Rescue Plan Act, reporter Lorie Konish cites a Harris/AP-NORC poll's findings on the issue: 

More than half of adults — 51% — said it is extremely or very important for medical debt to be forgiven, versus just 39% who said the same for student loan debt, the groups’ May poll found.
