Professor John Mark Hansen Discusses Controversial Statues

Harris Public Policy Professor John Mark Hansen wrote an article appearing in the Chicago Tribune calling into question Chicago's celebration of General Philip Sheridan who uncontroversially served his country and the Union army, but who also led a "hard war" to "pacify" Native Americans. 

"Sheridan's campaign to suppress the Comanche, the Cheyenne and the Sioux was also justified as lawful and right, a necessary response to attacks on travelers and settlers. His ruthlessness toward the 'savages' on the plains was also very popular." 

"Monuments embody historical memory- that which we choose to remember and, equally, that which we choose to forget."
