Prof. William Howell comments for "The Washington Post" April 12, 2024 In an April 11, 2024 piece in The Washington Post entitled: "Before Trump, here’s how some other countries prosecuted their ex-leaders: With the U.S. on the brink of prosecuting an ex-president for the first time via Donald Trump, other cases around the world have demonstrated the merits of placing top officials on trial — and the potential pitfalls" by Mark Berman and David Nakamura, Prof. William Howell was quoted: “The notion that not just charges would be brought, but that a former president and possibly future president might be convicted and sent to jail is truly extraordinary,” said Howell, an American politics professor at the University of Chicago. “How the system and how the American public will respond is going to be really revealing about the nature of our democratic commitments.” Faculty Spotlight William Howell Sydney Stein Professor in American Politics William Howell has written widely on separation-of-powers issues and American political institutions, especially the presidency.
