New Hope in the Fight Against Inequality Wed., February 21, 2018 | 5:30 PM — 8:00 PM Venue SIX10 at Spertus Institute 610 South Michigan Avenue Chicago, IL 60605 United States In recognition of UChicago Giving Day, join Harris Public Policy for a discussion regarding federal, state, and personal taxes. This discussion will feature Professor Chris Berry and Associate Professor Damon Jones, President & CEO of the Center for Financial Service Innovation Jen Tescher (MPP'96), and will be moderated by the Executive Director of the Center for Municipal Finance Michael Belsky. Berry, the newly named William J. and Alicia Townsend Friedman Professor, will highlight his innovative research, which points us toward a fairer, more progressive local property tax system, featured in a 2017 Chicago Tribune series. Jones will share his current research on universal basic income and the promise it holds for offsetting inequality without adversely affecting labor markets. Tescher, the president and CEO of Center for Financial Services Innovation, will examine the impact of inequalities in personal cash flow on the working class and the private sector’s role in making systems work for everyone. So, how can we reduce the Inequality Gap? Join our three distinguished speakers as they ponder how national and local government, as well as private sector responses to that question can make a difference. The program will be followed by a reception for guests to continue to the discussion. A complimentary shuttle will depart from Harris at 5:00 p.m. (a return shuttle will not be provided).
