Hong Kong Harper Lecture: Understanding and Preventing Conflict in a Data-Driven Age Sat., May 13, 2017 | 7:00 PM — 9:00 PM Kowloon Shangri-La 64 Mody Road Tsim Sha Tsui East Hong Kong, Hong Kong S.A.R., China, IL 60637 United States Sponsored By: UChicago Alumni Association In the wake of recent ISIS attacks around the world, it is clear that terrorism and insurgency have the capacity to shape national and international politics. Moreover, ongoing conflicts in Syria, Nigeria, Afghanistan, Colombia, and elsewhere illustrate the profound repercussions of political violence for human welfare, the stability of governments, and economic growth. Ethan Bueno de Mesquita, AB’96, argues that the actions of rebel and insurgent organizations can be understood in terms of the same strategic logic that economists use to model and predict the behavior of corporations and other economic agents. He will describe what leading social scientists have learned about the causes of conflict, the efficacy of attempts to reduce political violence, and the challenges associated with countering violent, strategic adversaries like ISIS.
