Governor James Albert Noe and Linda Noe Laine Professor of China in World Affairs, Harvard University

Iain Johnston's research and teaching interests focus on ideational sources of foreign policy behavior, socialization in international institutions, and the analysis of identity in the social sciences, mostly with reference to China and East Asia. He is the author of Cultural Realism: Strategic Culture and Grand Strategy in Chinese History (Princeton 1995) and Social States: China in International Institutions, 1980-2000 (Princeton 2008). Johnston co-directs the Princeton-Harvard China and the World program. In his non-academic life, Johnston is a member of the National Academy of Sciences' Committee on International Security and Arms Control, and works on issues in US-China crisis management.
