Steward, a visiting professor at the Harris School of Public Policy from 2005 until 2011, was eulogized in The New York Times with an obituary that outlined his dedication to education, ranging from from his service as president of Spelman College, a historically black women's college in Atlanta and president of the College Board, which accompanied his belief in the power of affirmative action and the ability of minorities to meet the challenges of standardized tests. He also served as a director of The New York Times Company and chief executive of the Chicago Community Trust. "I believe in human dignity and individual potential," Steward said in a 1986 interview with The College Board Review. "I don't like heavy-handed government or other forms of centralization. As administrators, I think we are at our best when we help release the best in other people." Visit The New York Times to read the full remembrance. A longer biography of Stewart, along with a collection of his correspondence with foreign dignitaries, is available in this collection.
