University researchers have been responsible for foundational discoveries, including innovations that drive economic growth and technologies that change how we understand the universe. Today, researchers at the University and affiliated laboratories cross disciplines and continents to develop solutions to some of the world’s most pressing problems. In this lecture, Eric D. Isaacs will show how the University’s scientific legacy and distinctive approach to inquiry continue to empower our researchers to develop new fields, improve human health, and ultimately transform our world. Millikan Distinguished Service Professor in Physics and Executive Vice President for Research, Innovation and National Laboratories at the University of Chicago. He is a condensed matter physicist whose research focuses on quantum materials, low temperature and semiconductor physics, and new energy technologies. He previously served as provost of the University and is a former director of Argonne National Laboratory. Isaacs is an American Physical Society fellow, sits on the boards of several US Department of Energy national laboratories, and has served on the US Department of Energy’s Basic Energy Sciences Advisory Committee.
