March 28, 2025 Joshua GottliebProfessor Joshua Gottlieb, an economist at the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy, has been selected as the 2025 ASHEcon Medal recipient. This prestigious honor recognizes Professor Gottlieb’s significant contributions to the field of health economics as an early-career scholar. The ASHEcon Medal is presented to an economist aged 40 or younger who has made outstanding contributions to health economics, primarily through publication in leading economics journals. Professor Gottlieb’s scholarship draws on labor economics, industrial organization, and urban economics to uncover how market forces operate in the complex environment of healthcare. His research specifically focuses on labor markets, provider-insurer relationships, and the location and scale of healthcare production. His most recent working paper, "The Rise of Healthcare Jobs," sheds light on the significant transformation in the U.S. labor market since the 1980s. Gottlieb is Co-Director of the Becker-Friedman Institute’s Health Economics Initiative and a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He has published in top academic journals, including the Quarterly Journal of Economics, Journal of Political Economy, and American Economic Review. He serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Health Economics, is a member of the Journal of Economic Literature’s Board of Editors and was previously a Co-Editor of the Journal of Public Economics. In addition to the ASHEcon Medal, Gottlieb’s research has earned him other prestigious awards, including the Kenneth J. Arrow Award from the International Health Economics Association and the Outstanding Dissertation Award from the National Tax Association. Professor Gottlieb will be honored at the upcoming 14th annual ASHEcon conference, which will take place at the Grand Hyatt Nashville in Nashville, Tennessee, from June 22 to June 25, 2025.
