How to stop violence? The world is awash with groups fighting, from Hindu-Muslim riots, to civil war in Syria or South Sudan, to shootings on the streets of Chicago. Lots of solutions are proposed. The real question is: what is the problem? Without a proper diagnosis, any solution is unlikely to work. Most explanations for violence fall into five buckets. And these five kinds of explanation can help us understand an surprising amount of violence, from Chicago to South Sudan to Syria. Once we understand the problem, we are in a better position to seek solutions.
