The conversation will examine Duncan's career and experience so far, his time in the Obama administration, his take on what's next for education policy, as well as what's ahead for him professionally, including his new endeavor with Chicago CRED, an affiliate program with Emerson Collective. About the Speaker Arne Duncan, LAB'82Former U.S. Secretary of Education;Senior Distinguished Fellow, Harris Public Policy;Managing Partner, Emerson Collective As managing partner at Emerson Collective, a former U.S. Secretary of Education, and current Senior Distinguished Fellow at Harris Public Policy, Arne Duncan returns to Chicago on a mission to improve the lives of young adults in his hometown. Through partnerships with local business leaders, community organizers, and nonprofit groups, Duncan aims to create job and life opportunities for disconnected youth between the ages of 17 and 24. Prior to joining the Obama Administration, Duncan served as chief executive officer of Chicago Public Schools. From 2001 to 2008, Duncan won praise for uniting the city’s stakeholders behind an education agenda that included opening 100 new schools; expanding after-school, summer learning, early childhood, and college access programs; dramatically boosting the caliber of teachers; and building public-private partnerships around a variety of education initiatives. Duncan graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University in 1987, majoring in sociology. At Harvard he served as co-captain of the basketball team and was named a first team Academic All-American. About the Moderator Cristal Thomas Gary, MPP'01Former Deputy Governor of the State of Illinois;Former Vice President for Community Health Engagement, University of Chicago Medicine Cristal Thomas Gray is a Principal at Leavitt Partners, a health care intelligence firm specializing in helping clients successfully navigate the transition to value-based health care. Cristal leads Leavitt’s State Insight practice area, focused on complex issues in Medicaid and other state health programs. Prior to joining Leavitt Partners, Cristal spent 15 years as a trusted advisor to Governors, Cabinet Secretaries and Health Care Executives. She has led complex health and human service agencies as well as and several bold Medicaid and health care delivery system transformation initiatives. She is a former Deputy Governor of the State of Illinois; a former state Medicaid Director; US Department of Health and Human Services Region V Director; and White House Office of Management and Budget Policy Analyst. Cristal received her bachelor’s degree in molecular genetics from the Ohio State University and a master’s degree in public policy from the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy.
