I have always been driven by a desire to serve - to take the privileges I have had and turn them into purpose. Whether it is improving access to healthcare, rethinking education systems, or uplifting marginalized communities, I want to be part of building systems that heal rather than harm.Harris gives me the tools to do that with integrity. It challenges me to ground my passion in rigor: to ask better questions, use evidence meaningfully, and think boldly but act responsibly. I am here because I believe change is possible, and I want to be someone who helps make it happen. What has been your favorite class, or which class are you most looking forward to taking at Harris? My current favorite has to be Prof. Wolfe's Conflict and Humanitarian Intervention class, and I really look forward to taking Power & Development with Prof. Raul. But I struggled to find a direction that truly fit me. One day, I volunteered at a local marine research institute and that experience opened my eyes to the power of policy in protecting marine life and managing human impact on the ocean. I wanted to be part of that work and understand how government decisions are made and implemented. After working in the Korean government for over five years in marine and fisheries policy, I decided to study public policy more deeply. I came to Harris not only to strengthen my policy knowledge, but also to learn from people from all over the world who bring diverse perspectives and ideas to solving public problems. What has been your favorite class, or which class are you most looking forward to taking at Harris?Honestly, I’ve enjoyed most of my classes so far. Analytic Politics was intellectually challenging, and I’m really enjoying Hydropolitics this quarter as well. But what I enjoy the most isn’t just the class content—it’s hearing how students from different backgrounds ask questions, share their perspectives, and challenge each other’s assumptions. That kind of environment makes every class more dynamic and meaningful for me.Why did you want to serve as an orientation leader?I wanted to spend the summer doing something meaningful and people-centered. While working in a lab or doing an internship can also be valuable, I was more drawn to the idea of meeting new people and enjoying more casual, genuine moments—especially since I’ll return to my government position after graduation. As someone who experienced homesickness and uncertainty when I first moved abroad, I know how overwhelming those early days can feel. I hoped that by becoming an orientation leader, I could help others feel less alone and make their transition a little easier. How can new Harris students make the most of their experience? At Harris, UChicago, or the city?If you’re planning to continue in academia after your master’s degree, you may focus more on coursework, research, and meaningful lab experiences. That’s important—but even then, don’t forget that the seasons change and there are always opportunities to connect with others and enjoy small moments along the way.I also hope you make space for both study and life: take care of your health, exercise regularly, and meet great people. Remember that UChicago is more than just Harris—you can take classes across different schools and attend university-wide events. And don’t miss what the city has to offer! I’d recommend swimming in Lake Michigan during the summer or joining local festivals like Lollapalooza. How do you like to spend your free time?I'm a total writing nerd. I love writing short stories and poetry—mostly in Korean. I like to think of my drafts as quietly waiting to be shared with the world someday (though I'm not saying they’re any good!). Since I write in Korean, I’m happy to share links if you're curious—just be warned that machine translations sometimes get gender pronouns hilariously wrong.Outside of writing, I enjoy swimming and playing tennis. I grew up doing freestyle and backstroke pretty casually, but since moving to Chicago, I've taught myself breaststroke and butterfly. As for tennis, I’ve been playing for about a year. A few of us at Harris started a casual tennis WhatsApp group—join us if you play (or just want to hit balls wildly across the court like I do)!Where is your favorite place in Chicago? It’s hard to pick just one favorite place, but there are a few spots I always take friends when they visit. I love both the main campus in Hyde Park and the Gleacher Center downtown. And of course, the views from the top of the Willis Tower or Hancock Tower are amazing. But over time, I became increasingly interested in how these tools could be used not just to drive efficiency, but to create lasting social impact. That’s what drew me to public policy — and to Harris.Harris’s mission to take social impact down to a science deeply resonated with me. It reflects the way I understand the world: through data, rigorous analysis, and a values-driven approach to decision-making. I was particularly drawn to Harris’s emphasis on applying these tools in real-world contexts — from the Harris Community Action Fellowship to the Tarrson Impact Investment Fund — where I’ve been able to bridge my private sector experience with hands-on, mission-driven work. At Harris, I’ve found a place where my background in economics doesn’t just inform my policy education — it sharpens it. And in return, policy gives purpose and direction to the skills I bring. What has been your favorite class, or which class are you most looking forward to taking at Harris?Sustainability Principles, ESG Risk, and Value Creation in Organizations with Professor Gabriel Presler. Why did you want to serve as an orientation leader? My experience at Harris has truly been shaped by the generosity of second-years, peers, and alums who offered advice, shared resources, and created space for honest conversations when I needed them most. Talk to the second years, attend things that seem interesting even if you're not sure why, and don’t underestimate how much you’ll learn outside the classroom. Also, give yourself time to just exist in the city.
