I chose the Harris MPP program because I want to attend an academically flexible program outside of Washington, DC, where I can build a diverse network and have a graduate education where I can take some classes outside of international affairs. I also want to attend a policy school where the program and the university have a great reputation. At Harris, UChicago, or the city?I believe that students can make the most of Harris and the greater Chicago area simply by attending events and building connections with people. The only way to build community is through social capital. One way that I have started making the most of my time here is through the connections that I have built through commUNITY. Chicago is so rich in history, culture, art and the people. There are many neighborhoods to explore and amazing collectives of young and older people organizing social events. In addition, it is also important to do your research. As for the University of Chicago campus, it's important to get involved and join the orgs that align with your interests. For example, I’ve joined the Women’s Ensemble and am exploring dance RSOs. As Graduate students, I believe we get so caught up in our research and studies that we confine ourselves to a box (Harris) and forget that before we were adults we were kids with a multitude of interests. Don't lose that innate child-like curiosity inside of you. Most times it leads to key insights and exciting opportunities. How do you like to spend your free time?In my free time I like to ride my cousin's motorcycle, roller skate by the lake, cook, read, travel, take photos and to produce creative projects with friends.Where is your favorite place in Chicago? The Silver RoomAlex KrogerAlex KrogerDegree Program: MPPUChicago Email: krogera@uchicago.eduHometown: Chicago, ILUndergraduate Institution: Indiana UniversityWhy are you studying public policy at Harris? Why Harris?” is how each of us started our journey of UChicago as we put our idea of how we hope to make a change forward. And yet, there was a fear of being left out as I moved across the world and transition into a completely different and new life. The one thing that made me believe that this place can become a second home was in the Orientation week.
