Government Debt, Default, and Inflation – Greece and Spain Today, and the United States in 1933

Please join us for a luncheon discussion with Eric Leeper, Rudy Professor of Economics - Indiana Univesity and Visiting Scholar at Becker Friedman Institute, on "Government debt, default, and inflation – Greece and Spain today, and the United States in 1933." Rapid growth in government debt scares people. Will the government default? Will taxes rise? Will inflation take off? This talk provides a framework for thinking about the consequences of debt expansions under the different monetary-fiscal arrangements in place across countries and over time.

The discussion will be moderated by Thomas Coleman, Executive Director of the Center for Economic Policy, and Benjamin Keys, Assistant Professor at Chicago Harris.

This is part of the Harris Speakers on Economic Policy and Markets series hosted by the Center for Economic Policy. The Center aims to integrate the study of financial markets with public policy, and offers MPP students a Certificate in Economic Policy
