HSG co-president Kartik Saboo

We recently sat down with the newly elected Harris Student Government (HSG) co-presidents, Kartik Saboo and Rana Khalil, to learn what made them run for office, what they're hoping to accomplish and how they spends their time outside of the classroom.

Here's our conversation with co-president Kartik Saboo:

What made you want to run for President?

"Be the change that you wish to see" has guided me in life and professionally, and being in a position where you can effect that change makes a huge difference. Hence, Presidency!

What are you most eager to accomplish over the next year? How has COVID-19 affected your plans?

I really look forward to building and boosting a community-based in-person learning-and-growing experience. COVID-19 has only provided more fuel to work on this cause.

How has your experience at Harris so far prepared you for this important role?

The last year, where we experienced grad school online, has revealed to us how difficult it is to build a meaningful and comprehensive learning experience as-well-as peer relationships in a pandemic. It has also exposed many gaps that we experienced as students, which I learnt from, and the motivation to address them and work to improve on them have prepared me for this role.

What is the greatest strength of the Harris student body?

Its ability of being an interface and a voice for both the students and the administration for the greater good.

How do you plan on interacting with the Harris student body?

By being open to all the modes of interaction that work best for the student body! Be it a WhatsApp group or a party, a study session at Keller or an HSO meet, I plan to be available wherever my fellow colleagues and classmates feel more comfortable interacting.

What are you most excited to start working on now?

Starting off on a high for the coming Fall!

When you're not studying, working or leading the Harris student body, what are your favorite things to do in Chicago?

Exploring new Chicago neighborhoods and the food scene, photographing the city, cycling, and playing tennis.
