Harris Accolades

Every year PPSA and Student Affairs team up to offer spectacular awards to celebrate Harris’ diverse, committed, and engaged community. This year, Accolades will be part of UChicago Alumni Weekend.  Accolades will take place at the Harris Community Brunch and Panel in Ida Noyes Hall on Saturday, June 4th at 11:00 am.  Students, staff, faculty and alumni are invited attend this event which will also feature a panel discussion co-sponsored by MiPPS and WiPP.  The panel discussion on women and minorities in public policy will feature Cristal Thomas, MPP’01, Elizabeth Kneebone, MPP’03 and Anne Richard, AM’84.

Descriptions of Awards and Criteria for Nomination

Student Leader of the Year

To highlight a first and second year student who have consistently exceeded expectations to improve the Harris school.

Specific Criteria:

  • Taken action on behalf of the Harris student body.
  • Demonstrated initiative, foresight, and courage in speaking out on behalf of Harris student issues and concerns.
  • Builds partnerships across student organizations, administration, and faculty.

Community Leader of the Year

To support the work of a first and second year student who have demonstrated exemplary service to our local community. 

Specific Criteria: 

  • Plans and participates in meaningful engagement with the community outside of the University of Chicago.
  • Encourages collaboration with organizations and individuals who might otherwise be marginalized.
  • Actively seeks out organizations and opportunities that have a positive social impact.

HSO of the Year

To recognize a student organization that excels in enriching the Harris student experience.

Specific Criteria:

  • Organizes events and partnerships that enrich Harris student life.
  • Makes meaningful contributions to the campus community.
  • Has made a significant impact on the quality of the student experience at Harris throughout the academic year.

Submit your vote for Student Leader of the Year, Community Leader of the Year, and HSO of the Year.

Harris HR partners with PPSA in recognizing an administrative staff member for their outstanding student support.  This staff member provides direct support and guidance to our students.  Harris HR also partners with PPSA to select an outstanding faculty member of the year.  This faculty member demonstrating excellence in teaching and student support. 

Outstanding Student Support of the Year 

This award honors staff that have provided exceptional service to individual students or student groups on a consistent basis throughout the academic school year - whether through personal advising, development of programs, or improvements to procedures or resources that affect students.

Specific Criteria:

Individuals nominated should exhibit the following characteristics:

  • Identifies and anticipates students’ needs or expectations
  • Demonstrates genuine concern for students’ best interest
  • Consistently provides ongoing support that goes above and beyond expectations and job duties
  • Prioritizes student satisfaction, interest, and engagement in Harris activities

Please note that security officers, facilities and café workers are not considered Harris staff and are therefore ineligible for nomination. Tenure with Harris/the University is not a criterion for nomination. 

Submit your nomination for the Outstanding Student Support of the Year.

Outstanding Faculty of the Year

This award honors a faculty member demonstrating excellence in teaching and student support. This faculty not only exhibits expertise and enthusiasm for their field, but challenges students to think and act as engaged leaders, change agents, and social innovators. 

Specific Criteria:

Individuals nominated should exhibit the following characteristics:

  • Demonstrated superior teaching evidenced by ability to motivate and inspire students in and out of the classroom
  • Consistently provided ongoing support that goes above and beyond teaching responsibilities
  • Creatively engaged students in course curriculum or research
  • Demonstrated an interest in fostering the academic and personal development of students

Selection Process

The selection process for the Outstanding Student Support of the Year and Outstanding Faculty of the Year awards is based on a ‘write-in’ ballot system:

  • Students may nominate one individual 
  • Faculty and Staff members may not submit nominations
  • Submissions will be reviewed by a selection committee.  This selection committee will consist of the Harris HR staff and a member of PPSA leadership.
