Incoming students starting at Harris this fall will often be juggling several tasks. From coursework, to searching for an internship, to attending events and lectures, UChicago has several platforms to help ensure you maximize the value of your grad school experience.

The following is a list of the platforms you will most frequently encounter during your time at the University of Chicago, and especially Harris. We hope this serves as a quick guide to common resource systems over the coming months.

UChicago Email

Your UChicago email is your resource for keeping up to date with important course registration dates as well as on-campus lectures, social events, and engaging with Harris Student Organizations. Now that you have set up your email, you should continue monitoring your inbox for regular updates about upcoming deadlines, event information, and updates about the upcoming Math & Coding Camp. Closer to the start of the Autumn quarter, keep a lookout for information about academic requirements and pre-registration. You will also receive all official UChicago email communication—including messages from various offices at Harris, senior university administration, COVID-19 and immunization updates, and campus security alerts—on your UChicago email. Check your UChicago email at least once daily to ensure you do not miss any important information.

Canvas

Much of your academic coursework will be managed using Canvas. Before a course begins, you will be added to the Canvas site for that course. This is where instructors upload syllabi, assignments, lecture slides, videos, class calendars, Zoom links, and more. Many courses require students to submit assignments via Canvas as well. Some courses may also require you to use Gradescope for submitting assignments, and those submission links are embedded within course-specific Canvas sites.

Before the start of the Autumn quarter, you will also use Canvas to complete the required Orientation training modules and for Math & Coding Camp.  Another great resource to check out on Canvas is the Harris Student Handbook, which is the most comprehensive resource on almost anything related to student life at Harris. International students also get access to the International Student Resource Guide on Canvas, with detailed information on pre-Harris preparation and logistics of moving to Chicago.

HarrisLink

You also recently received access to HarrisLink—Harris’ career development portal. Students usually use HarrisLink for two main purposes:

  • To search for jobs and internships that are Harris-specific (as opposed to UChicago GRAD Gargoyle ,which advertises jobs for the entire campus community. However, on-campus student jobs with Harris administration and some research assistantships may be advertised on GRAD Gargoyle.)
  • Use Harris’ extensive career development resources such as VMock (to polish your resume), book advising appointments with a Career Development Office Career Coach, get updates about job fairs, and access mock interview resources and recordings of past webinars with industry experts.

my.uchicago.edu

Start off with my.uchicago.edu to look for information on anything associated with the University of Chicago. This includes academics, financial aid, and your personal profile. Many students use my.uchicago.edu to access information on:

  • Finances: Check your tuition invoice, pay bills, enroll in direct deposit, etc.
  • Class registration: Pre-register and enroll for classes, view course feedback for previous years, and submit your course feedback for current courses.
  • Transcripts: View your unofficial transcripts at end of each quarter, request official transcripts
