Meet Michelle Hoereth, Assistant Dean for Diversity & Inclusion at the Harris School of Public Policy.  Michelle reflects on the start of the school year and the release of the Diversity & Inclusion Roadmap.

I am always excited about the beginning of the academic school year and welcoming new students to the Harris community  is definitely one of my personal highlights. To kick-off the year, Harris released its first ever Diversity and Inclusion Roadmap, which thoughtfully lays out our goals, our action steps, and our measures of accountability. The development of the roadmap was an inclusive process and shares input from students, staff, and faculty at Harris.

Our Diversity and Inclusion work, however, is not designed to be a series of boxes we check off each year to signify our work is done, but rather a process of constantly learning, reflecting, and growing.  During each student’s short tenure here at Harris, we are committed to providing them tools to go out and positively impact the world. We also provide students with experiences both inside and outside the classroom that help them become conscientious policymakers and develop a deeper appreciation for how and why policies impact people differently.

We have a robust set of programming this year that focuses on a broad range of Diversity and Inclusion topics designed to engage students and the entire Harris community, including our upcoming Diversity Day. All of our work will point back to our Diversity and Inclusion Roadmap and will challenge us in many ways. It’s a great time to be a Harris student, and I can’t wait to see what the year will bring.
